What we learned this month:

texting is phenomenally expensive. True, most consumers think of text messaging as the cheapest way to communicate, partly because it’s so simple but primarily because a standard 160-character text averages just 12p. But think of it as a data cost, and it goes up to £750 per megabyte. Each character in an SMS message equates to one byte of data. 160 characters equals 160 bytes of data.

So it takes 6,250 SMS messages to add up to 1MB of data transfer. And 6,250 SMS messages at 12p per message works out at £750 per MB. Not so much of a bargain now, eh? Our thanks to mobile VoIP purveyor Vyke Communications for this useful info.
