True, most consumers think of text messaging as the cheapest way to communicate, partly because it’s so simple but primarily because a standard 160-character text averages just 12p. But think of it as a data cost, and it goes up to £750 per megabyte. Each character in an SMS message equates to one byte of data. 160 characters equals 160 bytes of data.
