|
The LG KF750 (aka Libra) is a premium touchpad-controlled slider that feels great, a decent weight with a good deal of metal and carbon fibre involved. The slide is Nokia-precise and we couldn’t persuade the phone to bend or creak. The display is covered with reinforced scratch-resistant glass – shame it’s not also fingerprintproof – and there’s a comfortable steel bezel around it (no sharp edges) Under the hood the spec is pretty high-end. It’s a 3G phone with a forward-facing video call camera as well as a quality 5 megapixel camera on the back and a decent wadge of internal memory (160MB) as well as a microSD slot inside. This is definitely a desirable phone albeit some (minor) issues that punters are sure to overlook in the quest for fashionable handset ownership. | |

LG Electronics has announced the UK launch of the LG Viewty ‘Purple’, another exclusive for Orange to follow the success of the pink version of the LG Shine. We know it as the Viewty, and we are aware of the high-tech goodies onboard: the impressive 3” touchscreen display with 240 x 400 pixel resolution, the HSDPA 3.6 Mbps capability, the stereo Bluetooth and an excellent 5 megapixel camera with autofocus. There is no real difference except the colour change, and a this purple-cased version will apparently be available in limited quantities at select Orange stores only? | |

The U900, the new Ultra flagship, is designed “for style-conscious users who do not wish to compromise technology for design” – so they get a slim and stylish slider that is light and simple to use yet is loaded with functions.For starters there’s the Magical Touch navigation touchscreen, which change according to the operating mode à la LG KF600. It comes in a slim metal body (“a premium look and feel” says Samsung, and that’s spot on), offers 3G with HSDPA at 7.2Mbps, and has lots of music-playing goodies including music library navigation and a Bang & Olufsen amp. The 5mp camera comes with face detection, image stabiliser and Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). The best news for the reseller – the Samsung Soul is being launched with a £5m national promotional campaign. It will be tough to ignore. | |

| Nokia 6212 Classic

The Nokia 6212 Classic does what it says on the tin – you couldn’t get more classic (or more Nokia-ish) than this bar phone. The extra twist is the provision of Near Field Communication; NFC is the next generation of mobile connectivity (albeit based on Bluetooth) and allows the user to seamlessly share content, pay bills or use a mobile as an electronic ticket for travel and other purchases. Nokia is taking a bit of a punt on NFC. This is its second NFC-enabled phone, after last year’s NFC version of the 6131 version, but the technology is still in its infancy and it will be a while before it gets widespread adoption. Meanwhile the 6212 Classic looks sound. It boasts compact dimensions, weighs in at only 88g, and runs on the popular nonsmartphone Nokia S40 software platform. The Nokia 6212 classic will be available in Q3 for around 200 euro before subsidies. | |

| The Nokia 6124 classic is a compact multimedia device that Vodafone is taking exclusively; this continues a relationship the two started with the Nokia 6234. This time high speed internet and Vodafone’s entertainment services are the big draw, with easy access to both. The 6124 classic features HSPDA for superior data rates, a large 2in display with “outstanding” brightness and clarity, a 2mp camera with flash and panorama mode, and a familiar form factor. “The name says it all, as the Nokia 6124 classic represents the iconic design familiar to the Nokia brand,” said the Nokia man.

| If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – just add some useful bells and whistles. The deservedly popular Nokia 6300 has acquired a successor, but the original looks and functionality are retained. They’ve just been enhanced by WiFi and VoIP support – basically, the 6300i looks to have the Nokia 6301’s internals. (What do you mean, you’ve never seen a 6301? It was produced specifically for a few network carriers and never saw the light of day on the general market.)The 6300i combines the solid appeal and the customisability of the Nokia S40 platform from the old 6300 with up-to-the-minute UMA for WiFi. It’s also a tri-band GSM/EDGE device with a 2in QVGA display, 2mp camera, microSD memory card slot, a 2.5mm audio connector and stereo Bluetooth. So it’s a simple, well-made, not unattractive phone with WiFi and few obvious downsides. Should sell well. It’s available around now.
