Dig that JCB…mobile
JCB has teamed up with Data Select to bring the channel a range of tough phones that are set to fly off the shelves. There are four devices in the range, the Tradesman, which is the world’s first floating phone, the Pro Talk, with dual SIM and a two-way radio built in, plus the touchscreen Pro and the one ton pressure tested Sitemaster.
The Tradesman is built to military spec, as are all the devices in the range, and certified to IP67, includes and FM radio and a torch and has a colour 1.44 inch screen. It’s a GSM-only, tri-band device with 180 minutes talk time and 130 hours standby (so when it falls down a drain, you have plenty of time to rescue it and still have a chat).
With the Pro Talk and the Pro, these handsets are practically identical quad-band GPRS, waterproof and dustproof devices certified to IP67. Both are touchscreen and include GPS, a wind up as well as mains charger, and space for 1000 phonebook entries.
Pro Talk is the standout handset here with a two-way radio built into the device, with a 2km range given line of sight. This is a huge, really exciting selling point for people in trades; perfect for on-site teams that need to communicate all the time, but don’t want to spend money on mobile calls or separate walkie-talkies.
Lastly, the Sitemaster is a GSM tri-band device that is water and dust resistant, certified to IP54, and one ton pressure tested. It can be dropped from two metres, and includes an FM radio, torch, laser pointer, and room for 300 phonebook entries. It has 270 minutes of talk time, with 450 hours on standby.
The JCB range is ready from Data Select from mid November with limited stocks available this side of Christmas, but orders are being taken now for deliveries into the New Year.

These tough phones have a great shelf life and appeal to a broad set of end users, from clumsy types, to hard hat wearing workers on site, to field engineers. They look good and, of course, invite attempts to break them, which is added entertainment value in my book.
While the Ventura Rugged Mobile is strong, it’s not really tough. However, we hope to have more to show you soon from Data Select’s deal with JCB on the launch of a new range of really tough phones due out any time now. The range will offer a number of handsets from entry level to smartphone, opening up Toughphone technology to customers of all levels. Whereas the original JCB Toughphone focused on strength, the new range will be feature-rich with dual SIM, camera, fully waterproof, GPS, torch and touchscreen technology available on selected models.
