The company ran continuous over a two-week period and found calls had a 99.95 per cent connection rate, average RTP delay of 76 milliseconds and 12 milliseconds of jitter.
Voip Unlimited added that it found the Starlink satellite’s network implementation of Network Address Translation (NAT) required workarounds, with notable interference at sunrise and sunset. During testing, the company’s in-house development team resolved these issues to optimise reliability and throughput.
Initial estimations from Voip Unlimited show that a single Starlink satellite may be capable of running 10,000-15,000 concurrent calls. As such, the company said the service could be a viable option for larger enterprises looking to consolidate multiple connections into a single service.
Mark Pillow, managing director, Voip Unlimited, explained, “Over a fortnight we ran more than 10,000 asymmetrical audio calls. Our results show that Voice over Satellite may be more reliable than some mobile networks; an ideal solution for many businesses up and down the country!”
“We see it like a mobile leased line; entirely private, amazing speeds and reliability. It will be ideal for high bandwidth users in rural areas or businesses that need a portable connection that can handle high volume.”
Voip Unlimited said it will continue to explore the technology, which could lead to the technology being developed into a product for the company’s reseller partners.
