Vodafone has become one of the founding partners of The Climate Group’s 24/7 Carbon-Free Coalition.
Alongside the likes of Google and AstraZeneca, the company will share knowledge on how organisations can move to cleaner energy.
The Coalition, which was launched on 24 September at Climate Week New York City, will enable partner organisations to work together to show the benefits of adopting 24/7 carbon-free energy and explore innovative approaches to measuring and reporting energy use.
Vodafone has been a member of The Climate Group’s RE100 initiative since 2018. The company has used 100 per cent renewable energy to power its network since 2021, using power purchase Agreements (PPAs) and renewable energy guarantees of origin.
While PPAs constitute an increasing portion of Vodafone UK’s energy supply, there is more industry can do to collectively accelerate the full decarbonisation of energy grids as global demand for electricity continues to grow.
Reaching 24/7 carbon-free energy grids is complicated and there is no precedent to follow. However, a fully decarbonised energy grid is a necessary step if the UK is to achieve its 2050 net zero target.Vodafone’s membership of the new coalition will see it join leading organisations to learn about and explore the topic in more technical detail.
Nicki Lyons, chief corporate affairs and sustainability officer, Vodafone UK, said, “We are delighted to join the next iteration of The Climate Group’s work around clean energy procurement and excited to learn from and collaborate with the other partner organisations.”
