The additions mean that detailed topographical maps from National Mapping Agencies can be selected and immediately downloaded over a GPRS or wireless connection directly on to a compatible mobile phone handset.
Topographic maps for Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, and Switzerland have been added to the maps already available on ViewRanger for Great Britain, Finland, and Slovenia. Once downloaded, the maps remain on the handset allowing ViewRanger to be used in the most rural location without requiring a mobile network connection to be available.
ViewRanger is specifically designed for the off-road user, whether hill walker, mountain biker, birdwatcher, or weekend stroller. Topographic maps include detail on contours, footpaths, woodland, waterways, coastal areas and a wealth of other information. ViewRanger licenses its mapping data from national mapping agencies and therefore its maps are immediately familiar to those who have used paper maps.
However, ViewRanger is more than simply a map on a phone. It offers a unique combination of 2D and 3D mapping, GPS navigation, sports-GPS analysis, content sharing, multimedia route and city guides, plus BuddyBeacon tracking.
Running ViewRanger on Symbian S60 handsets with integrated GPS, including handsets from Nokia, Samsung and LG, removes the need for a separate outdoors GPS device.
Mike Brocklehurst, CTO at Augmentra, said: “Users now have quick and easy access to a wide set of topographic maps in Europe. ViewRanger already represents a revolution in outdoor recreation and sports-GPS tools, delivering more capability and convenience than any dedicated outdoor GPS unit. This mapping update furthers our vision to create the ultimate companion for outdoor activity enthusiasts around the world.”
