‘Siloed’ cybersecurity needs new approach, says Trellix

New research from Trellix reveals the cost of siloed security, weak spots in protection and lack of confidence amongst security operations (SecOps) teams.

The study, which surveyed 9000 global cybersecurity professionals, found that 93 per cent of UK respondents described their current security model as siloed.

Consequentially, 81 per cent of UK cybersecurity professionals said they were likely to recommend allocating budget to advanced solutions, including XDR (extended detection and response) to enable an integrated security approach.

The research revealed 67 per cent of cybersecurity professionals work with more than ten different security tools or solutions across their organisation, with more than 20 tools for four per cent of respondents.

“Increasingly, companies will rely on trusted partners who can steer them towards advanced cybersecurity solutions that offer adaptive security and flex to suit their requirements,” said Ed Baker, VP global channel sales, Trellix.

“There is a big opportunity here for channel partners, particularly those able to offer managed security services or consolidate the customer’s security products into an interconnected platform that can unify telemetry from different sources to create a more resilient organisation.”

Six in ten (64 per cent) of UK cybersecurity professionals admitted their current security tools don’t enable their SecOps team to work with maximum efficiency, and one third (32 per cent) recognised blind spots in their protection today.

While 42 per cent of UK respondents felt ‘very confident’ in their organisation’s ability to adapt to new threats, 62 per cent admitted security threats evolve so rapidly they are struggling to keep up.

On average, UK respondents’ organisations deal with 52 cybersecurity incidents each day, while over a third (37 per cent) admitted they cope with 50 to 200 incidents daily. Half of UK respondents reported being ‘inundated by a never-ending stream of cyberattacks’ as one of their biggest work frustrations. A fifth (18 per cent) said they can never or ‘only rarely’ prioritise and respond quickly to threats.

84 per cent of UK cybersecurity professionals estimated revenue losses of up to ten per cent for their organisation from security breaches in the last year. Medium size businesses in the UK lost an average of 9 per cent in revenue, compared to 5 per cent for large businesses.

Over a quarter (27 per cent) of UK respondents have implemented XDR in their organisation, with a further 40 per cent ‘very likely’ to do so in the next 12-18 months. Additional technologies likely to be implemented, according to the findings, include Endpoint Detection and Response (39 per cent), Network Detection and Response (38 per cent) and breach attack simulations (38 per cent).

“By consolidating all their security products into an interconnected XDR architecture, businesses can improve detection, response, and remediation capabilities,” said Fabien Rech, SVP EMEA, Trellix.

“Taking this approach allows security teams to regain confidence, giving them the upper hand while protecting the business – and the bottom line – from cybercriminals.”
