Powercall service providers Selcoms with cost effective standby power protection

Selcoms has found a cost effective way of protecting itself from regular power outages by installing a UPS and contracting with shentongroup’s Powercall service. Saving Selcoms capital expenditure and the challenges of siting, maintaining and refuelling a standby generator, the Powercall service will ensure that the company has emergency power in situ and connected up within a target time of less than one hour and a guaranteed commitment of three hours.

An award winning company, specialising in distributing best-of-breed wireless products to the communications market, Selcoms Managing Director, Hugh Garrod, was conscious that regular power outages, some lasting half a day, at the company’s rural location near Wantage, Oxfordshire was causing disruption to the day to day running of the business.

“I investigated standby generators but found the cost to be thousands”, said Hugh Garrod. “shentongroup couldn’t have been more helpful and suggested we install a 3kVA UPS system and contract with its Powercall service, which is costing us only a fraction of the amount of a standby generator over the three years of the contract”.

Now when a powercut occurs, the UPS instantly steps in to supply battery backup power whilst Powercall’s 24/7 control room despatches a generator from a local depot. Upon arrival the delivery engineer connects the generator to the pre-fitted connection point and advises the customer to switch over to the generator. An indicator lamp is fitted to the changeover switch to advise the customer when the mains power is restored.

“shentongroup has done an amazing job”, concluded Hugh Garrod. “Now we can maintain continuity when powercuts occur as lighting, IT equipment, telephones, heating and air conditioning are all supported by the UPS and the Powercall service. We are extremely impressed with the company and its service, support and expertise”.

Since it was launched in January 2005, Powercall has received a large number of responses and orders from companies across a wide range of market sectors including comms networks, FM companies, healthcare organisations, SME’s, local authorities and nationwide multi-site applications. With the demand for emergency power set to grow at 7% per annum over the next five years due to increasingly extreme weather and a less secure mains power supply, shentongroup is finding a high demand for its Powercall service.
