Government shares digital switchover guidance

New guidance from DSIT aims to help landline customers migrate away from the PSTN.

The UK government has published guidance for landline customers about how their provider will migrate their devices and services from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to digital technologies.

The guidance has been developed by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). It covers what is happening, why the changes are happening, and what customers need to do next.

Customers can also find out what will happen when their landline is migrated, and what if they own or run a business.

The guidance for businesses advises people to contact their communication provider for help on how and when their business will be affected.

The government added they will then need to make the switch to digital solutions, and this could involve upgrading and replacing existing systems and equipment.

This guidance coincides with the launch of a new telecare awareness campaign funded by BT and Virgin Media and backed by the UK government. BT and Virgin Media are using the campaign to urge telecare users in the UK to identify themselves ahead of the digital switchover.

The government says over two thirds of UK landlines have already been upgraded to VoIP.
