Still, the D800 is worth looking at in its own right. The build quality is superb, the black and chrome finish is sleek and luxurious, the screen is excellent, the camera is ok on stills and very good on video, and Samsung’s PC synchronisation software is as good as ever. It has Picsel’s file viewers. It’s also remarkably thin for a two-part phone – just 14.9mm. The number pad is flat, but raised horizontal chromium lines cleverly and effectively differentiate the keys. But someone has opted for a distinctly unfriendly joypad, the MP3 player is very basic, and there’s no memory card slot. The phonebook could have more fields per contact. The D820 (better camera and a memory card) will make a better replacement for the D600; in the meantime, think of the D800 as a competitor for the Nokia 8800 – It feels that good.• Looks and feels better than it is.
