The HTC Artemis platform is on the market from T-Mobile as the MDA Compact III and from HTC itself as the P3300.
It’s essentially an update of HTC’s keyboardless touchscreen Windows Mobile smartphones (eg Compact II), this one featuring integrated GPS receiver, FM radio, the most recent version of Windows Mobile 5, WiFi and EDGE support , and a more convenient size, weight and shape.
In fact the P33000 is so compact and elegant that it reminded us of some of the better Nokia smartphones. It feels comfortable in any pocket. It’s even genuinely comfortable to use with one hand; previous family members required at least two for just about every function.
It’s a shame about the lack of 3G capability (this phone could make a neat web browser or video caller) and it’s let down by its poor-quality camera. The real Achilles heel could be the surprisingly sluggish processor; some applications do seem very slow.
Still, we found the P3300 a pleasant surprise – its size is perfect; it has a great shining display, it’s hand-appeal is great. And if you do not plan to play games or use the P3300 as a music player, you can live without a superfast processor and a universal audio output.
