Ventura rugged mobile
Introducing a new tough phone to the market, this is the Ventura Rugged Mobile, now available in the UK. Looking remarkably like the other tough phones out there already, (it is 99% visually identical to the Sonim XP3), this one is water resistant to IP67 standards. That means it is dust tight and can be immersed in water up to one metre.
This rugged baby is designed to withstand being dropped from two metres, and has a tough anti-crush construction. However, it is the ability to accept two SIM cards that makes the Ventura stand out from the identikit crowds. The SIM cards can be from different airtime providers, giving the user the ability to choose different networks for different purposes.
The features of the Ventura Rugged Mobile also include GPS, touchscreen operation, long battery life of around 10 hours talk time and 280 hours on standby, WAP, MP3 and MPEG4 players. It is a GSM and GPRS device, enables sat nav and global rescue using a third party license, has a two megapixel camera with flash, FM Radio and a handy flashlight.
Durrocomm, the company behind the UK launch of Ventura, are pretty new to the market, having launched a basic rugged phone two years ago. However, they have stated that this handset is the first of a family of rugged communication products. It’s got it all. Now put on that hardhat and get out on site.

These tough phones have a great shelf life and appeal to a broad set of end users, from clumsy types, to hard hat wearing workers on site, to field engineers. They look good and, of course, invite attempts to break them, which is added entertainment value in my book.
While the Ventura Rugged Mobile is strong, it’s not really tough. However, we hope to have more to show you soon from Data Select’s deal with JCB on the launch of a new range of really tough phones due out any time now. The range will offer a number of handsets from entry level to smartphone, opening up Toughphone technology to customers of all levels. Whereas the original JCB Toughphone focused on strength, the new range will be feature-rich with dual SIM, camera, fully waterproof, GPS, torch and touchscreen technology available on selected models.
