There are now 2bn mobile phone users worldwide and new users are signing up at the rate of 1,000 per minute, says the GSM Association. More than 72m of them are 3GSM users. The GSMA notes that it took 12 years for the industry to reach the first billion connections, while the second billion has been achieved in just two and a half years.
