Apparently 1,712 mobile phones are purchased every hour in the UK – and each year 15m fall out of use, with around 11.3m of them thrown away. But a Vodafone UK survey suggests that only a third of the UK public have ever recycled an unused mobile phone, even though four in five of them know that phones can be recycled. Local Vodafone stores will accept handsets for recycling – every handset donated raises around £7 for The National Autistic Society – but this is surely something that any retailer could usefully set up.
